The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (Why is it considered to be a clic?)?

Hi, my teacher gave me this question to answer, but unfortunately I can not find an answer to it anywhere on the web. Here's the question... Why does “The Lottery” retain its appeal to audiences long after it first appeared in the New Yorker?. I looked at the Wikipedia on the story, but it does not explain why it has became a clic American short story.
