What is best format to digitize audio cd's for the future?

I have about 1,000 cd's I want to digitize. I understand that compression formats decide what I can't hear and delete it. I dont want to keep them in wav, but I want to futureproof as much as possible my collection. As of now, I'm planning to record them in mp3 at 256kbps. Should I do something else?
