Why did they say heck instead of hell in old kids cartoons?

In shows like Hey Arnold they used to not say Hell, and would instead say heck. It doesn't really made sense as a censorship thing as the kids that would hear it and be offended would be the kids that go to church and hear it from their priest (/opinion and reason for asking), so why did this happen?
